My first sociology class

I like sociology because it is informing, empowering, and actually fun to learn about. I believe that sociology has helped me greatly. We, as a society, never really think about how or why our society works unless the information is put right in front of us.

If I were grading the paper as a professor today the grade would have probably been even lower. I analyzed things like the Charlie Brown Christmas Special for a class paper, eeking out a decent grade but nothing to be proud of. I learned a lot in these four different classes: Sociology is a field of study that truly pertains to every one of us.


These activities were very empowering to me and helped me apply what I learned in my sociology class at BC as well as what I was learning at Seattle University.

Theory, content, and book reviews - need to add significant depth, context, or in-field relevance or critique of an established or topical work; reviews should be used to grow knowledge, not promote a work, a reviewer, or an institution: Sociologists study all things human, from the interactions between two people to the complex relationships between nations or multinational corporations.

Sociology has helped look more objectively at the society in which we live. Being open about social justice issues is the only way changes are going to be made…and I believe sociology makes room for that change. I hope to continue to study sociology and design my own major. These and other scientific developments spurred social changes and offered hope that scientific methods might help explain the social as well as the natural world.

Regardless of what field you are studying, sociology gives a perspective that is useful and applicable to all paths of life. To me, sociology class is not only a class, but it is about exploring my identity and seeing this world in a whole different perspective.

Like any profession, sociology is not without its flaws. Each key figure is associated with a particular theoretical perspective and orientation. Merton called middle-range theory: An emphasis on empiricism and the scientific method is sought to provide a tested foundation for sociological research based on the assumption that the only authentic knowledge is scientific knowledge, and that such knowledge can only arrive by positive affirmation through scientific methodology.

I always find it interesting to learn what drew others to a career in sociology, one that most of us never learn about as children. Our students tell us, time and time again, that the knowledge they gained in our Sociology classes was helpful to them in other majors and careers.

For example, the rise of the social sciences developed in response to social changes. Classes like Sex and Sexuality and Society of Religion has shaped ideas that were unclear to me before. However, positivism broadly understood as a scientific approach to the study of society remains dominant in contemporary sociology, especially in the United States.

Types of Social Classes of People

There were times that the concepts introduced in class challenged my own values or beliefs, and it pushed me to really think about what I believe in and why I believe in this way.
